FAQs

I primarily work with charcoal to create high-contrast, detailed portraits.

Yes, I welcome commissions and would love to create a personalized piece for you.

Because my drawing style relies on hyper-realistic detail, the quality of your reference photo directly impacts the final artwork. I work directly from what I can see in the photograph.

To get the best possible result, please look for photos that meet these criteria:

High Resolution & Sharp Focus:

The photo should be crisp, not blurry or pixelated. If you zoom in on a face, you should be able to clearly see the details of the eyes, individual hairs, and skin texture.

Good, Natural Lighting:

Dramatic or clear lighting is everything in monochrome art. Outdoor daylight (like morning or late afternoon light) or a photo taken near a bright window works beautifully. It creates natural highlights and deep shadows that give the final drawing depth and a 3D effect.

Avoid Flat Flash & Harsh Overexposure:

Photos taken with a direct camera flash tend to flatten a face, washing out the shadows and highlights that give a portrait life. Similarly, photos where the subject is completely cast in dark shadow make it difficult to see necessary details.

Original Files are Best:

Whenever possible, please send the original, unedited photo directly from the phone or camera via email. Avoid screenshots or images downloaded from social media (like Facebook or WhatsApp), as these platforms heavily compress files and strip away the fine details needed for drawing.

Unsure about your photos? Feel free to send over a few options! I am more than happy to look through them with you and help select the one that will translate beautifully into a charcoal or graphite piece.

Anhyper-realistic drawing takes anywhere from 60 to 120 hours of pure drawing time, so the time varies based on complexity, but typically a commission takes 4-8 weeks. If you need a piece for a specific date or gift milestone, please let me know as early as possible.

Feel free to use the contact form on my site or email me directly at info@artbyanneke.art.
